How do you take videos off of a video camera and put them on the computer? I am using a Sony Digital 8 camera?

I really want to take the videos off of my video camera and put them on the computer for editing. But even though I have the chord and everything, when I plug in the camera, it does not appear on the computer screen. What do I need to do?

(again, I am using a Sony Digital 8 Video Camera)

I plugged my video camera into the computer and went into “Windows Movie Maker”, but when I plugged it in, the camera showed no signs of being plugged in and the software didn’t recognize it.
