What video file extension provides the best quality?
I have ripped one of my favorite DVD’s as a backup on my Hard Drive. I was wondering what file format to convert it to to save as much of the video/audio as possible. I know that converting it into any format will decrease it’s quality, but which will preserve it the best? Also I can play just about any format on my laptop so recommend whichever you like.

you should know that lately or for a couple years video file became a container. like you can make .avi with various range of codecs but still avi. imagine it like video file is a book codec is a language and video itself is the text which tells the story. i hope this will help you to understand video terminology a lot better! i hope it helps
and best compression/quality ratio is with h264/x264 codec. and extension with mostly mkv but mp4 can also contain h264 codecs.
