How do I upload a video onto my computer from my video camera?

Or is there a better way to record something on the computer other than using a video camera?

Video needs a firewire connection (ieee 1394). Your computer needs a firewire card installed in your computer and a firewire cord to connect your video camera to your PC then use the software that came with your movie or use windows movie maker (came with XP)

Hello.

You did not mention your video Camera Model. So lets make a few basic assumptions.

A video camera could be a digital Video Camera or an analog Camera.

A digital one would have either an IEEE-1394 or sometimes call i-LINK or FireWire (They all the same). Some digital Video Camera will have an USB port too.

But an analog video camera will mostly have a composite video output (Analog Video) either in the form of S-VIDEO or RCA connector.

If your camera has Firewire/i-Link/IEEE-1394, you could purchase a firewire card and install inside your PC. Some PC mainboard (newer model) might already have such device.

USB connectors are standard port in PC now days and should not be of a problem.

But if your camera is an analog one, all is not lost just yet. You could get an USB Video Grabber or a Video Capture Card with analog input.

Newer Camera with DVD is much simpler as you could just pop-in your camcorder DVD into your PC DVD and viola! You could transfer the video directly without using the camera.

A newer camera with Hard Disc even better…. With an USB connection, you could access to the camera hard disc just like any external hard disc so moving picture to your PC is a breeze.

Next, get a video editing software. My recommendation Windows Video Editor if your need are simple video editor with limited feature (and free with Windows XP). but if your expectation somewhat higher then I would recommend you to purchase Ulead VideoStudio Ver 11plus or Pinnacle Studio Ver 11plus. Both are great editor and ease of use.

Best Regards.

The method used to transfer video from a camcorder to a computer is different for every type (tape/DVD/HDD/etc.) of camcorder and since you have not told us the type of your camcorder it is impossible to give you definitive advice – you will no doubt receive many guesses for answers – but these will only confuse you.
