How do you judge the resolution of video recorded with digital camcorders?
Some digital camcorders boast of 10.2 megapixel resolution for stills. However there is no mention of video resolution. Is video resolution somehow related to the resolution of stills? How do we judge the resolution of video recording with a digital camcorder?

Video resolution and still resolution are different.
Video resolution is a combination of factors, but for the most part are within two areas – whether the video capture is interlaced or progressive frames per second (fps) and whether it is standard definition or high definition.
Within these areas there are different measures of resolution, but they would take pages to describe here.
There is more than the links below, but they should at least get you started.

Any camcorder you buy will have the video resolution in the specs. The more lines of resolution, the better the quality picture you will get. Interlaced and progressive scanning relates to how the the lines of resolution are scanned by a tv or how they are recorded on a camcorder. Interlaced scans every other line from top to bottom, progressive scans all the lines from top to bottom straight down. For HD, 1080i 59.94 means, 1080 interlaced lines scanned at 59.94 frames per second. 1080P 23.98 is 1080 lines scanned progressively at 23.98 frames per second…Progressive will give you a better picture.

resolution of a digital video is generally taken to be the pixel count.
QVGA (the most common movie mode for digital cameras) is 240×320 = 0.08 MP
VGA is 480×640 = 0.3 MP
Digital Video (DV) is 480×720 = 0.35 MP
HDV is 1080×1440 = 1.5 MP
HD is 1080×1920 = 2 MP
DV and HDV pixels are not “square”.
Even at the highest video resolution, the 10 MP ccd image has to be greatly interpolated. When ccds were first used in television cameras, 0.36 MP was a common size. The extra pixels of a still camera are not necessarily wasted, they can be used for electronic shake reduction and digital zoom features.
