What video format would allow me to put videos onto a dvd-r disk and be able to View on a dvd player?

To be more descriptive, I am trying to put video files onto a dvd disk so that I can watch the video files on a dvd player. I havn’t tried yet, but I was wondering what the video file format would have to be. I have them as MP4 files, is that good?
