How to record a streaming video off the internet on your computer?

When someone like myself always having difficulty in viewing or listening to live videos and audios on the internet, is there a tool that enables someone to record, say, the often intermittent video and patch it up to enable easy and smooth viewing offline. Preferable, the tool should be able to work for videos from all sources.
